Dollywood Theme Park at a Glance

Dollywood is a world-famous 160-acre theme park nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Jointly owned by Herschend Family Entertainment and country music legend Dolly Parton, the park opened under its current name on May 3, 1986. It is the biggest ticketed tourist attraction in Tennessee, hosting nearly 3 million guests annually. The park is celebrated for its unique blend of thrilling rides, traditional Appalachian crafts, Southern food, and award-winning live entertainment.

What makes Dollywood special is its deep connection to the culture, history, and music of the Smoky Mountains, infused with Dolly Parton's personal story and charm. The park features over 50 rides and attractions, including 10 roller coasters, and is home to the largest non-releasable bald eagle sanctuary in the US. Unlike typical amusement parks, Dollywood emphasizes storytelling, artistry, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. It has won numerous international awards, including the prestigious Liseberg Applause Award, and is known for its exceptional cleanliness and friendly staff.

The park's history dates back to 1961 when it opened as Rebel Railroad. It later became Goldrush Junction and Silver Dollar City before Dolly Parton bought an interest in 1986. Today, it anchors a larger destination that includes Dollywood's Splash Country water park and two luxury resorts: DreamMore Resort and Spa, and the new HeartSong Lodge & Resort. The park continues to expand, with a new $50 million hybrid coaster/water ride called Nightflight Expedition planned for 2026.

Insider Tips

Crowd-beating, money-saving, and schedule-smart strategies from locals and repeat visitors.

  1. Arrive at the park before opening time and head LEFT to beat the crowds to the biggest roller coasters.
  2. Skip the lockers; most rides have free cubbies for your belongings.
  3. Get the famous cinnamon bread early in the day at the Grist Mill or Spotlight Bakery to avoid long afternoon lines.
  4. Download the free Dollywood app for real-time wait times, show schedules, and a park map.
  5. Ask for free cups of ice water at food kiosks and pour them into your own refillable water bottle.
  6. Measure your kids at the Measuring Station near the entrance to get color-coded wristbands for ride height requirements.
  7. If you want to avoid parking hassles, pay for Preferred Parking or take the Pigeon Forge city trolley from Patriot Park.
  8. Save your souvenir shopping and carnival games for the end of the day so you don't have to carry items around.
  9. Consider staying at Dollywood's DreamMore or HeartSong resorts for free trolley service, TimeSaver passes, and early park entry.
  10. Don't buy a TimeSaver pass immediately; check the app for wait times first, as lines may be short enough without it.
  11. Ride the classic Blazing Fury; it's an iconic indoor coaster with a cult following.
  12. Use the 'text when ready' feature at sit-down restaurants so you don't have to wait in line for a table.
