Rock Climbing in the Smokies

The region surrounding the Smokies has excellent rock climbing on sandstone and quartzite crags. Guided climbing is available for beginners, and experienced climbers will find world-class routes at Obed Wild and Scenic River and Chilhowee.

What to Know

Best Seasons

Best in spring and fall when temperatures are cool and rock is dry. Summer is hot but early morning sessions are productive. Winter is possible on dry days but cold fingers are a real limitation. Avoid the week after rain especially at sandstone crags.

What to Bring

Guided climbs: nothing except closed-toe shoes (guide provides harness, shoes, helmet, rope). On your own: climbing shoes, harness, helmet, belay device, chalk bag, draws or trad gear depending on route. Leave No Trace principles apply at all crags.

Find the Right Fit

1

Choose Your Level

Beginners should book a guided half-day or full-day with a certified guide who provides all gear and instruction. Intermediate and experienced climbers can head to Chilhowee or Obed with their own gear.

2

Pick Your Crag

Obed Wild and Scenic River (1.5 hours from Gatlinburg) is Tennessee's premier climbing destination with hundreds of routes. Chilhowee Mountain (45 min) has excellent sport and trad routes. Natural Dam near Gatlinburg has shorter beginner-friendly walls.

3

Check Conditions

Sandstone crags require 24-48 hours to dry after rain. Check the Mountain Project app or local climbing Facebook groups for conditions before making the drive to a specific crag.

Finding the Right Rock Climbing for Your Group

For Beginners

Book a guided half-day. Guides provide all gear, instruction on knots and harness use, and supervision on real rock. It is the safest and most enjoyable way to try climbing for the first time.

For Experienced Climbers

Obed WaSR has over 250 routes on high-quality sandstone. The Cumberland Plateau crags are some of the best in the Southeast and draw climbers from across the region.

For Groups

Top-rope setups with a guide can accommodate groups of 4-8 comfortably. Groups take turns on the same ropes. Axe throwing and climbing in the same day is a popular combination for larger groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rock climbing available right in Gatlinburg?

There are some short walls and bolted routes within 30 minutes of Gatlinburg, but the best climbing requires driving 45-90 minutes to Chilhowee or Obed.

Do I need experience to try rock climbing?

No. Guided top-rope climbing requires no experience. A certified guide teaches you everything you need in the first hour.

What is the difference between sport climbing and trad climbing?

Sport climbing uses pre-drilled bolts for protection. Trad climbing uses removable gear placed in cracks. Top-roping (most common for beginners) uses an anchor at the top with no lead climbing required.

Are there indoor climbing gyms near Gatlinburg?

The nearest full climbing gym is in Knoxville, about 45 minutes away. It is a good option for practice or bad weather days.

Is rock climbing inside the national park allowed?

Some areas inside the park allow climbing with permits. Check the NPS website for current regulations. The best developed climbing is outside park boundaries.

What should I wear rock climbing?

Comfortable athletic clothes that allow full leg and arm movement. Avoid baggy pants that can catch on the rock. Rental climbing shoes are provided by guided operations.
