The Smokies sit at the center of one of the most scenic regions in the South. Biltmore Estate, Asheville breweries and art galleries, Nantahala whitewater, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian are all within 90 minutes.
Year-round. Biltmore is beautiful in all seasons — especially fall foliage (October) and Christmas. Nantahala rafting runs March through November. Max Patch is best spring and fall but stunning in snow. Blue Ridge Parkway is closed during heavy winter weather.

Getting There and Parking
All day trips use I-40 or US-441. Gas up before leaving Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge — mountain roads have few stations. Check road conditions in winter on the TN and NC DOT websites.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and Cherokee cultural sites are excellent family day trips. Kids love the train. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is world-class and one of the best history museums in the Southeast.
Biltmore Estate with a winery tour and dinner is a perfect romantic day trip. Book the evening tour for candlelit rooms in the historic house.
Nantahala Gorge whitewater rafting is the best outdoor adventure within 90 minutes. Class III-IV rapids, gorgeous gorge scenery, and a memorable day on the water.
Asheville is one of the best food and brewery cities in the Southeast. The River Arts District has working artist studios, and the downtown food scene is outstanding.
Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC is about 80 miles from Gatlinburg — roughly 1.5 hours via I-40. Plan a full day; the estate alone takes 4-6 hours.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic highway through the Appalachians connecting the Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. The southern section near Cherokee and Asheville offers stunning drives and hikes.
Max Patch is a non-commercial Appalachian bald summit with one of the most panoramic views in the eastern US. The hike is only 2 miles round trip, making it accessible to most visitors. Arrive early on weekends.
Cherokee has Harrah's Cherokee Casino, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Oconaluftee Indian Village (living history), and the Unto These Hills outdoor drama. It is also the southern entrance to the national park.
Absolutely. A week in the Smokies could include two or three day trips without rushing. Biltmore and Nantahala are the most commonly combined with the main Smokies experience.
