Local Knowledge

Things Most Visitors Don't Know

These are the details that make the difference between a good ride and a great one.

wb_sunny
Go in the Morning
Mornings are cooler, the light through the trees is beautiful, and you'll beat the crowds. Most stables are done running rides by 4 PM anyway -- don't wait until afternoon.
place
Townsend vs. Gatlinburg
Stables near Townsend and Cades Cove feel more remote and peaceful -- fewer tourists, quieter trails. Gatlinburg stables are convenient if you're already on the strip but expect more foot traffic nearby.
groups
Great for Groups
Most stables can accommodate large parties with advance notice. If you have 8 or more riders, call ahead -- some will hold the whole ride time for your group and can arrange staggered start times.
child_care
Young Kids: Pony Rides
If you have a child under 6 or under the weight minimum, ask about pony rides. Several stables offer led pony rides in a ring for younger kids who aren't ready for a trail.
photo_camera
Bring Your Camera
The Cades Cove loop in particular offers stunning open valley views. Fall rides are spectacular with leaf color. Most guides are happy to pause for photos if you ask.
warning_amber
Rain Happens
Mountain weather changes fast. Most stables ride in light rain (it's actually beautiful). Call if there's a heavy storm in the forecast -- some may reschedule but most will still run.
